HAMBURG, N.J. – Sophomore Kyle Deisher (Montgomery, Pa./Montgomery Area) carded an opening round 78 as the Monmouth University men's golf team finished the first round of the Fairleigh Dickinson Invitational in eighth place, Sunday afternoon at the difficult par-71, 6,734-yard Crystal Springs Country Club.
Deisher matched his front-nine 39 on the back-nine to end his day tied for 15th with his seven-over par. Brady Goodling (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) finished one stroke behind Deisher with a 79, good for a share of 19th overall, and Corey Carrick (Howell, N.J./Howell) followed with an 82. Colin Buckley (Duxbury, Mass./Boston College H.S.) fired an 87, while Cody Gross (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) ended the afternoon with a 92.
“The course played very difficult with a lot of gusty winds as seen by all the high scores,” commented Head Coach Dennis Shea. “We are not playing up to our ability and we need to get help from our fourth and fifth men to compete with the top teams.”
Binghamton turned in a 300 to take the team lead into Monday's final round, two strokes in front of the Knights. Hofstra sits in third with a 313, followed by Towson, which carded a 316 good for fourth. Central Connecticut State occupies fifth, posting a 317, a stroke better than Saint Peter's in sixth, while Villanova, which ended the afternoon in seventh, holds a six-shot lead on the Blue and White with its 320. The Hawks hold a two stroke advantage on MAAC foe Manhattan, which finished a stroke better than Iona. Delaware (322), Wagner (334), Lafayette (339) and St Francis Brooklyn (344) round out the 14-team field.
The final round will tee off with an 8:00 a.m. shotgun start on Monday, April 14th.
