MALVERN, Pa. – Junior Brady Goodling (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) opened up the spring campaign by posting his third top-10 finish of the season as the Monmouth University men's golf team wrapped up play 13th overall against a stacked field at Villanova's Wildcat Invitational, held at the par-71 White Manor Country Club. Goodling, who finished with a share of 10th, notched a 222 over the 54-hole event.
Goodling opened up play for the Blue and White by carding a 73 in the opening round, before ending Tuesday with a 77 in the second 18-holes. The third-year Hawk fired a one-over-par 72 in Wednesday's final round to land in the top-10 in the first event of the spring. Senior Corey Carrick (Howell, N.J./Howell) was the next Hawk into the clubhouse, finishing with a 77-81-77 good for a score of 235, four strokes in front of rookie Tommy Whelan (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) who registered 79-77-83 in his second career tournament. Sophomore Kyle Deisher (Montgomery, Pa./Montgomery Area) completed the tournament a stroke behind Whelan after rounds of 83-79-78, while junior Colin Buckley (Duxbury, Mass./Boston College H.S.) rounded-out the Hawks' lineup with a 248.
Columbia earned the team crown, posting an 892, a stroke in front of Army which landed in second. Binghamton earned third with an 896, a shot better than Youngstown State which slipped to fourth. Rhode Island and Delaware both earned fifth with a total score of 907, followed by Drexel in seventh with a 911 which finished three strokes in front of both La Salle and Butler, which shared eighth. Wagner, which carded a 922 good for 10th, was trailed by host Villanova (925) and Lehigh (928), which finished in 11th and 12th, respectfully. The Hawks, who fired a 312 in the opening round before carding back-to-back rounds of 309, finished in front of Fordham (941), Manhattan (943) and Bucknell (958) which rounded out the 16-team field.
“Despite the playing conditions and it being our first event of the spring, I was a little disappointed in the results and thought we could have played better,” stated Head Coach Dennis Shea. “We will get back to work tomorrow (weather permitting) and get ready for the Lafayette event this weekend.”
The Leopards' event, a 54-hole affair, kicks-off on April 5th from the Silver Creek Country Club in Hellertown, Pa.
