BALTIMORE, MD. - Playing in its first-ever Division I men's lacrosse game in program history, Monmouth University dropped a 10-8 decision at UMBC on Saturday afternoon at UMBC Stadium. The Hawks, whose roster features 32 freshmen, were paced by freshman attackman Dan Bloodgood (Jackson, N.J./Freehold Township), who scored three goals and added an assist for the Blue & White.
"I could not be more proud of the guys and the way we played and competed this afternoon," stated Monmouth head coach Brian Fisher. "There were definitely some nerves in the early stages, but we showed a lot of character clawing our way back into the game after putting ourselves in a small hole early on. Overall, I'm excited about the direction we are heading and that the season is finally here. With the rate at which we have improved from the fall, preseason and even during today's game, I could not be more excited that we have another chance to put the jersey on in a few days."
Trailing 4-0 at the end of the first quarter, Monmouth answered with a 4-0 second stanza to send the game to halftime knotted at 4-4. Bloodgood scored the Hawks' first-ever goal at the 11:23 mark of the period, an unassisted tally for Monmouth. Freshman Chris Daly (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) off a feed from freshman Tim Kemner (Woolwich, N.J./Kingsway Regional) cut the deficit in half with 10:38 remaining, while Bloodgood's second goal off an assist from freshman Kevin Osback (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn/East Stroudsburg), brought the Blue & White within 4-3 at 8:53. Freshman Eric Berger's (Ardsley, Pa./Penn Charter) first career goal tied the contest with 6:50, which held until the break.
The Hawks took their first lead on a score by junior midfielder Zach Johannes (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII/Franklin & Marshall) 2:02 into the third quarter, 5-4, and MU scored twice in a span of 49 seconds to surge ahead, 7-6, on unassisted goals from Kemner and Bloodgood.
UMBC's Ty Kashur scored his first collegiate goal with 2:13 to play in the third to tie the game for the fourth time at 7-7 heading to the final 15 minutes.
UMBC netted the next two scores to grab a 9-7 advantage with 10:45 remaining, before freshman Tyler Keen's (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) first career goal got the Hawks within 9-8 with 6:05 left.
The Retrievers earned the next draw and the Hawks were called for an illegal procedure penalty, and on just its second man-up opportunity of the game, UMBC's Nate Lewnes found Matt Gregoire, who beat MU reserve netminder junior Garrett Conaway (Marriottsville, Md. (Liberty [Essex/Howard CC]) to reclaim a two-goal advantage with 4:38 to play.
The Hawks got an extra-man chance in the final two minutes, but UMBC keeper Connor Gordon made a save on Bloodgood with 1:29 remaining and the Retrievers kept possession for the remainder of the contest.
Fisher added, "The margin between winning and losing at this level is really thin and we need to get better in certain areas and clean up some little things in order to be successful."
UMBC outshot the Hawks, 38-33, while Gordon came up with 12 stops. Conaway, who entered the game in the third quarter, took the loss, making eight saves for the Hawks. Freshman Nick Hreshko (Warrington, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) started for the Hawks and made six saves in the opening 30 minutes of action.
Monmouth returns to action on Wednesday, February 26, when the Hawks travel to Staten Island, New York to take on Wagner College at 3:00 p.m.
