EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. –Junior Brady Goodling (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) carded a tournament total of 148 to earn medalist honors for the second-straight tournament as the Monmouth University men's golf team won the ECAC Championship, Monday afternoon at the par-72 Twisted Dune Golf Club. The Hawks, who shot a tournament total of 623, won the event for the first time since the 2005 season when Anthony Campanile took home top honors.
“It's always great to get a win, but to do it on a very difficult course makes even better,” stated head coach Dennis Shea, now in his 21st at the helm of the men's program. “Brady really managed himself and played a very smart round on Sunday. The way the course was playing, you had to keep the ball in the short grass and stay consistent so his 71 was truly remarkable and helped set the foundation for his individual victory.”
Goodling, who won the Iona Quad Match two weeks ago, shot a one-under-par in the opening round on Sunday, the only player in the field to register a subpar round. In Monday's final 18 holes, the junior shot a 77 to finish six strokes ahead of Rider's James Buttermark.
Kyle Deisher (Montgomery, Pa./Montgomery Area) continued his strong fall campaign with a third place result, inking rounds of 76 and 79 for a 155, followed by Corey Carrick (Howell, N.J./Howell) and Cody Gross (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) who both posted back-to-back rounds of 80, to share sixth place with a total of 160. Colin Buckley (Duxbury, Mass./Boston College H.S.) rounded out the Hawks' lineup with a 36-hole score of 165 (83-82).
As a team, the Blue and White, which built a 23-stroke lead heading into the final round, posted its first team victory of the season. The Hawks landed in front of two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foes, finishing 17 strokes in front of Fairfield (640) and 22 shots in front of Rider (645). Saint Francis Brooklyn finished fourth with a 659, 20 strokes in front of UMass-Lowell, which ended the event with a 679.
MU returns to action this upcoming weekend, October 6-7, as it competes in the Binghamton Invitational at the Links of Hiawatha in Apalachin, New York.
