PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Paced by sophomore Kyle Deisher's (Montgomery, Pa./Montgomery Area) two-round total of 146, the Monmouth University men's golf team ended day one of the Rutgers Invitational in 10th place with a total of 587. The Hawks, competing in their first event of the 2013 season, had all five players shoot rounds in the 70s through the first 36 holes.
Deisher registered back-to-back rounds of 73, three strokes off his career-best round, to lead the Blue and White and earn a share of 22nd place. Junior Brady Goodling (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central), an all-tournament team selection a year ago, shot a 77 in the opening round before firing a team-best 72 in the second 18 holes to finish three shots behind Deisher. Corey Carrick (Howell, N.J./Howell) and Colin Buckley (Duxbury, Mass./Boston College H.S.) each shot 151, while Cody Gross (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) rounded out the Hawks lineup with a 154 after rounds of 78 and 76. Playing as an individual in his first collegiate event, freshman Jesse Hazam (Mechanicsburg Pa./Mechanicsburg ) posted a two-round score of 160 (81-79).
The hosts Scarlet Knights hold a two stroke lead over USC Upstate and Bethune Cookman with a 571, followed by Hofstra which posted a 36-hole score of 574. Adelphia landed in fifth, four strokes behind the Pride, while Lehigh and LaSalle carded totals of 580 and 584 to earn sixth and seventh, respectively. Fairleigh Dickinson registered a 592, good for eighth place and a one stroke lead on Savannah State, which stands four shots ahead of the Hawks to round out the top-10 of the 16-team tournament.
The Hawks will tee off the final 18 holes of the Rutgers Invitational Saturday morning.
