WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Three Hawks reached
double-digit scoring, but the Monmouth University women's basketball team fell
to Wake Forest, 88-54, Tuesday night at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum. With the
loss, the Hawks fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Demon Deacons improve to
1-0.
Carly Thibault (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme),
Alexis Canady (Forestville,
Md./Bishop McNamara) and Abby Martin (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) had 10 points
each, while Canady narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Thibault
shot 3-of-6 from long range, while Canady made 2-of-3 from distance. All 10
Hawks who saw the floor scored at least two points.
Camille Collier led Wake Forest with a game-high 17 points, while Secily Ray
compiled a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Chelsea Douglas also
added 12 points for the Demon Deacons.
For the game, the Demon Deacons outshot the Hawks, 55.9 percent (33-59) to 29.6
percent (16-54) from the floor and 42.9 percent (6-14) to 33.3 percent (7-21)
from three-point range. The Hawks outrebounded Wake Forest, 37-36, and took a
71.4 percent (15-21) to 66.7 percent (16-24) from the free-throw line. Monmouth
turned the ball over 34 times, while forcing 21 Wake Forest turnovers.
The Demon Deacons never trailed in the contest. After Ray made a pair of free
throws 16 seconds into the first half, she converted a fast-break lay-up less
than 20 seconds later. Canady countered with a three-pointer to cut the deficit
to 4-3, but the Hawks would draw no closer. Wake Forest scored the last nine
points of the first half and led, 37-15, at the break. The Demon Deacons' zone
press forced 21 first-half Monmouth turnovers.
The Hawks cut the deficit to 39-27 with a 10-0 run early in the second half,
when
Shira Shecht (Pardessiya, Israel/Hadassim) and Thibault each knocked down
a trifecta and Martin followed with a pair of two-point buckets. But Collier
reeled off 14 straight Wake Forest points, including four consecutive
three-point field goals, to help the Demon Deacons pull away.
The Hawks return to action Monday, Nov. 21, when they travel to Georgetown.
