Monmouth University running back David Sinisi (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) exploded for six total touchdowns as the Hawks earned their second victory of the year, topping Central Connecticut State at home by a score of 51-36.
Sinisi scored five rushing touchdowns and caught one score, for six total, breaking the school record held by Chris Reed (1998 vs La Salle). The redshirt sophomore finished the game with 26 carries (career-high) for 192 yards and four catches for 86 yards and had a fumble recovery on special teams.
The Monmouth defense forced five Blue Devil turnovers as the two teams combined for 1,077 yards of total offense.
After the Blue Devils took the opening kickoff into MU territory and drove to the Hawk 20 but CCSU quarterback Aubtrey Norris fumbled the snap and Monmouth fifth year senior Vinnie Fonte (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) pounced on the ball. Three plays later Central got the ball back after forcing a Hawk three-and-out.
Two plays into the Blue Devil drive Bobby Cole (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) intercepted Holmes, who had to rush the pass after being chased by Cella. The pick was the first of the redshirt freshman's career. The Monmouth offense was unable to get any points out of the second Central turnover after driving down to Central's 30 yard line and botching the snap on a field goal attempt. On third and long, Cole almost came up with his second pick of the day after Norris' pass got caught up in the wind but the redshirt freshman couldn't hang on.
MU quarterback Brett Burke (Wall, N.J./Wall) hit Steve Dowens (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South for a 26 yard gain, bringing the all out to midfield. After a pair of Sinisi runs, Burke took a sack but got most of the yardage back after hitting San Miguel for a 15 yard pickup. On third down Sinisi went virtually untouched for 37 yards to put the Hawks up 7-0 with 4:10 to play. The score marked the 19th straight game that the redshirt sophomore had scored in, the nations longest scoring streak. The Hawk defenders got a heavy dose of Jo Jo Freeman on the next CCSU possession, with the home squad taking the ball down to the MU 23. On fourth and three Norris hit Josue Paul on a screen, which the freshman took the rest of the way, knotting the score at 7-7 with 14:54 to play in the second quarter.
Sinisi gave the Hawks solid field position, taking the kickoff 33 yards to almost midfield. Two plays later Kiley took a pitch for 33 yards down to the CCSU four yardline, where Sinisi finished off the drive with his 12th touchdown of the season. The run game MU a 14-7 lead with 13:15 to play in the first half. Less than a minute later Freeman tied the game up on a 43 yard run. Sinisi capped a three play drive with a 46 yard screen to regain the lead for the Hawks with 11:05 to go in the first half.
On third and 11, Monmouth cornerback Ayo Falae (Newark, N.J./Barringer) picked off a Norris pass, returning the ball down to the Central 17 yard line. MU freshman fullback Kevin Hahn (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) scored his first touchdown of his career on a nine yard shovel pass. Freeman and the Blue Devils would not go away, with the junior taking the first play of the drive for 23 yards into MU territory. CCSU got the ball down to the Hawk six yardline but a fumbled snap was snatched up my Matt Sterner (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty).
Monmouth moved the ball to midfield on a series of rushing plays, including a career-long rush by fullback Marion Easley (Somerville, N.J./Somerville). Back-to-back false start penalties seemed to have doomed the drive for the Hawks but San Miguel grabbed a 10 yard pass to move the chains. With the catch, San Miguel became just the third Hawk to eclipse the 2,000 yard mark. Monmouth went for it on fourth and four but Burke's pass sailed high on John Nalbone (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence).
Norris moved the Blue Devils down to the Hawks 34 yard line with 1:24 to play, then had back to back runs to get down to the MU 19. One play later Norris hooked up wit hNick Colagiovanni for a easy touchdown pass after the Monmouth defender fell down. Monmouth got the ball back with 1:04 and a trio of timeouts, starting the drive from their own 35 yard line. The Hawks were forced to punt and CCSU made things interesting at the end of the half going for a last second 40 field goal that bounced off the upright. The two teams went into halftime with Monmouth holding onto a 28-21 lead.
The Hawks took the second half kickoff and moved deep into CCSU territory, with Burke mixing up the run and the pass. The senior quarterback hit Yudin for a 29 yard completion then came back two plays later and converted a third down by hitting San Miguel for his fourth catch of the game. Sinisi took his second direct snap of the game, scoring his fourh touchdown on a four-yard run to give Mu a 35-21 advantage with 11:37 to play in the third. On the next CCSU possession, the Hawks forced a fourth and four then stopped Norris on a qb keeper, earning the ball back on downs.
Sinisi eclipsed the 100 yard mark with nine minutes to play on a 19 yard run that got the Hawks out of a second and 18. Two minutes later Sinisi scored his fifth touchdown of the game on a four yard run, putting MU up 42-21. The running back's five scores tied Chris Reed's record, set against La Salle in 1998. After the Blue Devils moved to midfield, Kevin Walsh (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape) came up with a big sack on fourth down, giving the ball back to the Hawks with 4:35 to go in the third frame. Monmouth moved the ball far enough for Fred Weingart (New Egypt, N.J./New Egypt) to boot a 28 yard field goal, giving the Blue & White a 45-21 lead.
Central's Adrian Hall scooted around the left side for a 38 yard rush, finally being taken down by Falae at the MU 19 yard line. The Hawk defenders came up big again, this time with Chris Reed (Stewartstown, Pa./York Catholic) stripping Holmes of the ball on fourth down, where Fonti was waiting to recover his second fumble. Sinisi scored his school record sixth rushing touchdown on a seven yard pitch, with nine minutes to play in the game. His six touchdowns is also a NEC record by one player in a game. With 5:00 left Holmes closed the gap to 15 with a 16 yard rushing touchdown, but time ran out on the Blue Devil comeback attempt.
Burke was very efficiant on offense, going 19-of-25 for 22 yards and two touchdowns. Sinisi was the leading receiver with 86 yards, with San Miguel coming in second with 45 yards. Derek Bischoff (Roxbury, N.J./Succasauna) led the Hawks with 10 tackles, with Falae finishing second with nine stops. He also had four pass breakups and a interception on the day.
The 51 points are the most points given up by the Blue Devils at home since Rhode Island hung 56 on the Blue Devils in 2005. It was also the most point ever surrendered by CCSU against a Northeast Conference team. The game also marked the first time the Blue Devils have lost at home since the openeer in 2005, Rhode Island defeated them. Central falls to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in NEC play.
The Hawks, now 2-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play, will face St. Francis Pa. next Saturday. The Red Flash and the Hawks are set to kickoff in Loretto at 1 p.m.
