HAWKS FALL AT SETON HALL, 83-49

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The Monmouth University men's basketball team dropped a 83-49 decision to Seton Hall at Continental Airlines Arena on Monday night. The loss, Monmouth's eighth straight to the Pirates, drops the Hawks' record to 3-6. Seton Hall has won four in a row to improve to 5-1.

After Whitney Coleman gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead on a backdoor layup, the Pirates went on a 10-0 run to the first media timeout, paced by Grant Billmeier's five straight points. Monmouth cut the lead to 13-7 with 14:03 left, when Mike Shipman connected on a left-handed drive, but Seton Hall inflated the lead to 18-9 at 11:55 when Carl Marshall drained a corner trifecta.

Monmouth put forth a 10-5 spurt, when Dejan Delic and Shipman connected on back-to-back three's, to cut the Pirate lead to 23-19 with 7:07 showing, before SHU scored the next five points to regain at nine-point edge with six minutes left.

With 4:28 remaining, Delic made one of a possible four free throws after a foul and technical foul on the SHU coach to trim the lead to 28-22, before the Pirates ended the half on a 15-2 run to claim a 43-24 cushion at the half, as Monmouth made just one field goal in the final five minutes of action.

Monmouth cut the lead to 43-27 in the first 1:21 of the second half after Marques Alston connected on a short jump shot, but SHU's Jamar Nutter drained three consecutive three's to inflate the lead to 52-27 with 16:32 left.

Leading 52-32 at the 14:47 mark, Seton Hall ran off a 17-1 spurt to claim a 69-33 advantage with 9:32 left.

SHU, which lead by as many as 41 points in the second half, shot 51.6% from the floor for the game, while the Hawks connected on 37.5%.

Monmouth was led in scoring by Alex Nunner, who had a career-high 11 points. Shipman added six points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Seton Hall had four players score in double-figures, led by Brian Laing's 17 points. Harvey chipped in 14 points, while Billmeier added 11 and Stan Gaines scored 10.

Monmouth returns to action on Thursday, when the Hawks open Northeast Conference play with a home contest versus Long Island. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
