Duane Woodward, a former All-Big East selection at Boston College and successful professional player in Europe, completed his fourth year on the Monmouth men’s basketball staff in 2017-18. He oversaw all recruiting efforts during the 2017-18 season. He joined the staff for the 2014-15 season and was promoted to assistant coach in April, 2015.
Woodward is a major factor in recruiting at MU, developing many ties in his years in collegiate and professional basketball. He was a major part in player development and scouting over the course of Monmouth’s back-to-back MAAC regular season titles in 15-16 and 16-17, with the Hawks posting a 55-15 mark in that time.
Woodward helped develop Micah Seaborn into an All-MAAC First Teamer at guard, with Seaborn becoming the fourth fastest player in program history to score 1,000 points. In his first season in college, Deion Hammond was a unanimous selection to the All-MAAC Rookie Team at guard, with Woodward coaching the shooter to 12 points per game and 20 games scoring in double figures.
Woodward works primarily with the guards at Monmouth, including the development of two-time MAAC Player of the Year Justin Robinson, an AP All-America Honorable Mention. Robinson was the second Hawk to ever score 2,000 points and the first in MU's DI history, playing three seasons under Woodward's tutelage. Also a member of those Hawks teams was guard Je'lon Hornbeak, who scored in double figures as a senior and plays for the NBA G-League affiliate of the Indiana Pacers, the Fort Wayne Mad Ants.
A four-year starter at Boston College from 1994-98, Woodward was a member of the 1996 and 1997 Eagles team that advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament. In 1997, Boston College captured Big East regular season and tournament titles and Woodward was named to the Big East All-Tournament team that winter. He capped his collegiate career by earning Second Team All-Big East honors in 1998 when he averaged 15.6 points, 5.1 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game.
Following college, Woodward embarked on a 13-year professional career overseas, playing in over 10 different countries. During his tenure in the Cyprus League for AEL Limassol, Woodward helped lead AEL to back-to-back championships in 2003 and 2004 and was named Eurobasket.com All-Cyprus League Player of the Year and All-Cyprus League First Team, as well as the 2004 Eurobasket.com All-FIBA EuropeLeague Player of the Year. Woodward was also named to the 2008 Eurobasket.com Cyprus League All-Imports Team, and was a two-time All Star during his tenure in Europe.
Woodward joined the Fordham staff after a stint as an assistant coach at Queens College in the summer of 2013 where he recruited and scouted prospective student-athletes as well as scouted and edited game film.
Prior to Queens College, Woodward started his collegiate coaching career at Maritime College in the Bronx, where he helped the team triple its win percentage from the previous season. Woodward’s main responsibilities for the Privateers included recruiting, player development, practice planning, and scouting.
Woodward received his start in coaching as a coach with the 16U/17U for the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team, the New York Panthers, in 2008. He worked under the direction of well-known grass- roots director Gary Charles, whom he played for while in high school at Benjamin N. Cardozo High School.
The Queens native earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in marketing from Boston College in 1998. He currently resides in New York City.
