HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Three goals in a 10:02 span in the second half powered the No. 3 Monmouth University women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over No. 6 Stony Brook in the first round of the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament on Thursday afternoon.
The Hawks applied the pressure throughout the first half and out shot the Seawolves 10-1 but were unable to break through on the scoreboard.
Ava Allen and
Summer Reimet each had a pair of shots for the Hawks.
Linn Beck fired off a shot on goal early in the second half, but
Cassie Coster denied the Stony Brook opportunity.
Monmouth got on the board in the 75th minute as
Marisa Tava rifled a shot from the top of the box into the back of the net.
The Hawks continued to pressure and in the 83rd minute,
Liza Suydam was able to drop one into the back of the net for a 2-0 advantage.
Monmouth wasn't done yet as
Chloe Messer found the back of the net in the 85th minute off a pair of solid passes from Suydam and
Chloe Ferreira.
The Hawks held their ground for the final five minutes and secured the 3-0 victory.

Cassie Coster's shutout was her CAA leading 11th shutout of the season and 20th of her Monmouth career. Coster moves into a tie for second in the nation for shutouts this season.
